Owing to rapid inflation in 2003
bearer cheques with limited validity
were taken into circulation
by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe
as a supplement to the
practically worthless banknotes.
In April 2009, the Zimbabwean dollar
was suspended as a national currency
due to hyper inflation.
To the 1 October 2015 he finally lost
his status as legal tender and
was replaced by the United States dollar:
